ESF Introduces Its Competency-Based Training Process to the
Pharmaceutical Industry

Almost from the very beginning of its origin in 1969, ESF began working with Pharmaceutical companies beginning with Hoffman La Roche in 1974.

Orientation to the Study of Pharmacy

According to its website, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacies (AACP) "is the organization committed to education and scholarship for improving drug therapy.

"The Association will strengthen its mission of promoting professional and graduate education through effective use of policy, information, advocacy and programming."

Using its IDLS-ProTrainer 1 Process, ESF designed, developed, and validated an Orientation to the Study of Pharmacy for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacies (AACP).

Performance Evaluation Tool Developed

Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. is a U.S. pharmaceuticals affiliate of F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, a global healthcare company founded in 1896 in Basel, Switzerland. Known simply as Roche, the company is a leading innovator of medicines and services that enhance people's health, well-being and quality of life. Roche businesses include pharmaceuticals and diagnostics.

In the early 1970s, ESF developed task analyses and further specifications for the jobs of sales representatives and division sales managers of Hoffman-La Roche Laboratories. Initial stages of the work involved soliciting opinions from many current holders of these two positions through a mail survey and through personal interviews.


One reason for Roche's activity in this line of endeavor was to create an objective means of evaluating performance in these positions. In addition, sales personnel felt a need for specification of their duties.

As usual when dealing with a nationally active sponsor, ESF attempted to gain a broad knowledge of the thoughts and recommendations of the real subject-matter experts (SMEs), i.e., those who have successfully performed the jobs in question.

Personal interviews were held throughout the country. At selected sites, ESF personnel accompanied the Roche salesmen on their marketing rounds. At each stage of the process, after the mail survey, the personal interviews, and the on-site observation, the task analysis was completed.

ESF Development Project: Fette Compression Machine

Ortho-McNeil^®, Division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc, strives to provide innovative, high quality, safe and effective treatments to healthcare professionals in primary care, hospitals and other care facilities.

In 2002, ESF developed a series of instructional modules for Ortho-McNeil on how to operate and clean the Fette Compression Machine (models 3000 and 3100) used to produce pharmaceutical tablets.

ITS for Warner Lambert Pharmaceutical In-house Instructors

William R. Warner, an 1856 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, perfected a process to sugar-coat pills. By 1886 his business had expanded and he built a separate manufacturing plant in Philadelphia, which he called "Warner Hall."

The Warner Company acquired many companies over the years.



They included Lambert (manufacturer of Listerine) and the acquisition of Parke Davis in 1970. Then in 2000, Pfizer purchased Warner-Lambert. Pfizer is the world's largest research-based biomedical and pharmaceutical company.

Warner-Lambert brands flourish today because of their high quality, their ability to meet the needs of people around the world, and the strong sales and marketing support they receive. They include household brand names such as Listerine, Mylanta, Sudafed, Codral, Benadryl, Actifed, Dymadon, Visine and Schick Razors.

In 1994, ESF trained Warner Lambert staff in Interactive Teaching Skills.
