Interactive Teaching Skills (ITS) Workshops...
The IDLS workshop is one of the steps in ESF's process of becoming a professional trainer, hence the name "ProTrainer" which is derived from ESF's Total Training Process (ESF's ISD Model).
Interactive Teaching Skills (ITS) Workshop, a competency-based program, enables the participant to use interactive instructional techniques. These skills are sometimes called "platform skills".
During the ITS Workshop, ESF's Instructor models the correct performance during each of three skills labs. Each participant prepares a presentation, then presents it to the group while being videotaped. During playback of the video the Participants receive critiques from the Instructor and other Participants. Participants use Performance Checklists provided in the Skills Lab as a guide to critiquing the Subject. This helps the Participants improve their presentation techniques. Participants can readily see their improvements from the first tape to the last. The Instructor also provides individualized coaching to each Participant. self-study basis, you must practice the skills included in the Skills Lab of each module.
There are two very important rules for the critique session:
- Rule 1: NO Negatives Allowed in the review process. Absolutely no one, including the Subject, Instructor and Participants is allowed to give negative criticism. The only acceptable responses are constructive critiques, that is, what can the Subject do to improve.
- Rule 2: Limit each critique to sixty seconds or less per person. Often, after the first few critiques, there are no new points to add. Participants can just offer a couple of seconds
What You Will Learn...
The Interactive Teaching Skills (ITS) Workshops, provides an organized, structured, systems approach to developing competency-based skills on how to be an interactive instructor. The term "competency-based" means simply that the training relates directly to what YOU (the trainee or employee) will DO or PERFORM on the job, i.e. as an instructor in the classroom.
Specifically, using ESF's ITS Materials, you will be able to:
- Use ESF's unique TaskOutliner Software and StyleDoc Templates to develop an Interactive Instructor's Guide
- Develop interactive viewgraphs or slides for a PowerPoint Presentation
- Set up an interactive classroom:
- Present yourself as approachable
- Leave your personal problems at the door
- Begin the class by doing the following:
- Introduce yourself
- Invite learners to introduce themselves to the group
- State the course objectives
- Mention points of business and logistics
- Review the agenda and schedule
- Use interactive presentation techniques:
- Invite learners to be interactive
- Anticipate learner's needs
- Put learners at ease
- Use Media interactively
- Use Skills Labs Interactively
What You Will Do...
Using the Interactive Teaching Skills (ITS) Materials, during ESF's competency-based ITS Workshop, you will learn a process that will enable you to perform tasks related to each step of the ITS Process. Using ESF's unique TaskOutliner Software and StyleDoc Templates, while working alone or in an ITS Workshop, you will complete the following steps:
Step 1: Use an Existing OR Develop a New Instructor Presentation (Optional)
Using ESF's user-friendly software, TaskOutliner, you will:
- Use TaskOutliner to develop a TaskOutline of the tasks you want the learner to perform during the third Skills Lab.
- This presentation should be no more than five (5) to ten (10) minutes of contentincluding interactivity.
- Use StyleDoc to develop and format your Instructor's Guide and PowerPoint presentation instructional materials (viewgraphs or slides).
Step 2: Use Interactive Presentation Techniques
During this first Skills Lab, using your existing slides or those you developed in Step 1, and using a video camera to record your presentation, you will:
- Actively collect responses from Learners, and
- Provide positive feedback to Learners' responses.
Step 3: Use Media Interactively
During this second Skills Lab, again using your existing slides or those you developed in Step 1, and using a video camera to record your presentation, you will:
- Use Computers, i.e., PowerPoint
- Use Videotapes
- Use Viewgraphs
- Use Flipcharts
Step 4: Conduct a Skills Labs
During this third Skills Lab, you will use Coaching Skills to:
- Conduct "hands-on" practice sessions.
- Use the Performance Checklist generated by TaskOutliner to evaluate how well the Learners performed the requisite skills that will:
- Guarantee Learner success and
- Ensure quality performance.
What You Will Receive...
ESF's recently revised and streamlined proprietary Interactive Teaching Skills Materials can be used as a stand-alone self-instructional course or in a ITS Workshop. The ITS course materials include:
- Three self-paced Workbooks and three easy to follow Learner's Guides:
- Interactive Teaching Skills
- Using Media Interactively
- Conducting Interactive Skills Labs
- Skills-related Learner's Guides:
- Performance Checklists which allow learners to transfer learned skills to actual job tasks.
- During the Computer Lab portion of the Workshop, you will use ESF's user-friendly software TaskOutliner, to develop your classroom presentation.
- During the Computer Lab portion of the Workshop, you will use ESF's user-friendly StyleDoc, a fantastic series of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel Templates, to assist you in developing and formatting your custom-made viewgraphs or PowerPoint presentation and Instructor's Guide.
Attend One of ESF's ITS Workshops...
ESF offers its ITS Workshop in the format that best meets your specific needs:
- On-Site Workshops:
An ESF-Certified Instructor will come to your site and conduct the ITS Workshop over a 3-, 4-, or 5-day period. Although the Workshop can easily be completed in three (3) days, some clients, who want to complete a large project (Instructor's Guide & corresponding Skills Lab scenario) during the actual Workshop, may request a longer Workshop.
The ITS Workshop is restricted to eight (8) Participants per Instructor (maximum sixteen (16) Participants with two (2) Instructors).
- E-Learning Workshops:
The ITS Workshop is not ideal for an e-learning format because of the need to videotape each Participant's presentation and provide positive feedback to each Participant.
However, ESF can support an individual's or organization's learning efforts in the following way. ESF can:
If this type of approach is desired by the Client, ESF will:
- Conduct the ITS Workshop in a virtual classroom via "Live Meeting" or other virtual classroom used by the organization, and
- Use videotapes to model the appropriate Instructor interaction with the Learners in a virtual classroom via "Live Meeting" or other virtual classroom used by the organization, and
- Review videotapes of the Learner's presentations
- Evaluate the Learner's self critique
- Provide constructive feedback to the Learner.
- Establish a flexible schedule
- Set up a way so that a maximum of eight (8) participants can attend the virtual classroom sessions
- Establish a way for Participants to submit their videotaped presentations via email or ftp upload for critique by ESF's Instructor.
