Working with Challenging Learners (CL) Workshop...

How to Work with Silent, Difficult, & Special Learners

Introduction...

Total Training System

ESF's Working with Challenging Learners (CL) program is another step in ESF's process of becoming a professional trainer, hence the name "ProTrainer" which is ESF's Total Training System (ESF's ISD Model).

ESF's Working with Challenging Learners (CL) is a competency-based program that enables you, the participant, to use ADVANCED interactive instructional techniques.

Interactive instructors, like all teachers, frequently discover difficult and challenging Learners in their classes. Whereas in the Interactive Teaching Skills (ITS) Workshop, you primarily learn how to interact with motivated Learners, in the Working with Challenging Learners (CL) program, you will learn how to work with different types of Learners, some of whom may be a challenge to you and the other Learners in the classroom.

Instructors often ask:

  • "What if students are disruptive?"
  • "What about students who always arrive late?"
  • "What if the same person is always first to answer my questions?"
  • "What if my class gets out of control?"
  • "What if I'm making a presentation and Learners start to talk to each other?"
  • "What do I do when I ask a question and nobody answers?"

What You Will Learn...

Using ESF's Working with Challenging Learners (CL) Materials, you will learn how to:

  • Transform negative situations into positive outcomes.
  • Discover why some Learners act the way they do.
  • Deal with unacceptable classroom behavior.
  • Meet with the learner in a one-to-one, friendly, non-threatening setting.
  • Listen to and dialogue with the learner to uncover the causes of the learner's behavior.
  • Deal successfully with three categories of learners and twelve different personalities:
    • Silent learners: shy, inattentive, and non-responsive
    • Difficult learners: overeager, victim, resistant, highly-emotional, antagonistic, and out-of-control
    • Special learners: latecomers, prejudiced, distressed

What You Will Do...

Specifically, using ESF's Working with Challenging Learners (CL) Materials, you will be able to:

  • Practice dealing successfully with the various types of Challenging Learners by using:
    • Role Plays
    • Instructor and Class Member Critiques
    • individualized Instruction
  • Be challenged to:
    • Bring out the best in each learner.
    • Lead each learner to competency.
    • Channel the energy, interests, and ideas of each learner toward successful training for all.
    • Put the interests of your learners above your own, self-interest.

What You Will Receive...

ESF's recently revised and streamlined proprietary Working with Challenging Learners (CL) Materials can be used as a stand-alone self-instructional course or in a Challenging Learners Workshop.

The Challenging Learners course materials include:

  • Four self-paced, self-instructional Workbooks:
    • Introduction to Challenging Learners
    • Getting Silent Learners to Respond
    • Channeling Difficult Learners' Energies and Emotions
    • Dealing with Special Learners
  • Skills-related Learner's Guides:
    • Skills Labs on each of the above topics
    • Sample Role Plays for each type of Challenging Learner
    • Performance Checklists which allow learners to transfer learned skills to actual job tasks.

How to Use the Challenging Learners (CL) Materials on a Self-Study Basis...

When completing the Challenging Learners program as a self-study course, you must practice the skills included in the Skills Lab of each module.

To practice these skills, it is best to:

  • Videotape and Critique Each Presentation:
    • Videotape yourself in front of an audience whether the audience consists of co-workers, family, or friends.
    • Use the Performance Checklist included with each Skills Lab to critique yourself first.
    • Then, ask each member of your audience to critique you. Once again, they should use the Performance Checklists provided in the Skills Lab as a guide.
  • Follow these two very important rules for the critique session:
    • Rule 1: NO Negatives can be used in the review process. Absolutely no one, including YOU, co-workers, family, or friends, is allowed to give negative criticism. The only acceptable responses are constructive critiques, that is, what the Participant can DO to improve.
    • Rule 2: Limit each critique to sixty seconds or less per person. Often, after the first few critiques, there are no new points to add. Participants can just offer a couple of affirming comments.
  • Be sure to videotape yourself at least three times.
    • You will be astonished at the improvement in your skills after each presentation.

Attend an ESF Challenging Learners (CL) Workshop...

ESF offers its Challenging Learners (CL) Workshop in the format that best meets your specific needs:

  1. On-Site Workshops:

An ESF-Certified Instructor will come to your site and conduct the Challenging Learners (CL) Workshop over a 3-day period.

The Challenging Learners (CL) Workshop is restricted to eight (8) Participants per Instructor (maximum sixteen (16) Participants with two (2) Instructors).

  2. E-Learning Workshops:

The Challenging Learners (CL) Workshop is not ideal for an e-learning format because of the need to videotape each Participant's presentation and provide positive feedback to each Participant.

However, ESF can support a Client's learning efforts in the following way. ESF can:

    • Conduct the Challenging Learners (CL) Workshop in a virtual classroom via "Live Meeting" or other virtual classroom used by the organization, and
    • Use videotapes to model the appropriate Instructor interaction with the Learners in a virtual classroom via "Live Meeting" or other virtual classroom used by the organization, and
    • Review videotapes of the Learner's presentations
    • Evaluate the Learner's self critique
    • Provide constructive feedback to the Learner.

If this type of approach is desired by the Client, ESF will:

    • Establish a flexible schedule.
    • Set up a way so that a maximum of eight (8) participants can attend the virtual classroom sessions.
    • Establish a way for Participants to submit their videotaped presentations via email or ftp upload for critique by ESF's Instructor.

ESF's Mini-Workshops...

ESF offers two IDLS-related Mini Workshops that enhance the IDLS Process:

  1. How to Use ESF's TaskOutliner Software:

This Workshop is geared for those who:
    • May have already taken the IDLS-ProTrainer 1 Workshop but never used the TaskOutliner Software
    • Want to get more in-depth knowledge on how to use TaskOutliner.

  2. How to Use ESF's StyleDoc Templates:

This Workshop is geared for those who:
    • Want to get more in-depth knowledge how to use the user-friendly StyleDoc Templates in conjunction with ESF's IDLS-ProTrainer 1 Materials

Thanks ESF...

Peter and Mary,

The Challenging Learner Workshop is a must. It completes ESF's whole cycle of training. It's also fun to attend!

Difficult learners used to pose a threat to my whole classroom environment and my control as an instructor. Now I have complete control and my learners love my methods.
